Band

Beginning Band

The Beginning Band is designed for players who are new to their instrument. As you might expect, placement appointments are not required, but a consultation with the conductor (typically scheduled during the placement appointments for the other bands) is highly recommended. Beginning Band performs at the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 1.

Concert Band

Concert Band is for students who have demonstrated a significant level of musical skills.  This is a serious performing group that participates at the Youth Arts Coalition Band, Orchestra and Choral Festival, as well as several concerts throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 2.  They are also being trained in personal and ensemble skills necessary for participation in the Symphonic Band.  Placement appointments are required for placement in the Concert Band.

Symphony Orchestra
Students who are very proficient on their instruments may be invited to join the Symphony Orchestra. These students are held to the highest standards of musicianship. Symphony Orchestra performs at the Youth Arts Coalition Band, Orchestra and Choral Festival, represents HSMA on tour, and performs numerous times throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 3. Placement appointments are required for placement in the Symphony Orchestra.

Choir

Poco Arye

This unison two-part choir is geared toward students working to attain the proficiency necessary for acceptance in Bel Canto. Poco Ayre performs at the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 1. Placement is by placement appointment.

Bel Canto

This three-part harmony choir is for those who are working to attain the proficiency necessary for acceptance in Chancel Choir. Bel Canto performs several times throughout the year including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 2. Placement is by placement appointment.

Chancel Choir

 This is our most advanced choir and is open to older students and adults.  Chancel Choir participates in YAC events throughout the state, as well as several concerts throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 3.  Placement is by placement appointment.

Orchestra

Beginning Strings

The Beginning Strings class is for those who are new to their instrument. Beginning Strings performs at the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 1. Placement appointments are not required.

Intermediate Strings

This class is for students who have little experience on their instrument but are not beginners. Intermediate Strings performs at the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 1. Placement in Intermediate Strings will be based on a placement appointment.

Junior Orchestra

Junior Orchestra is for students who have demonstrated a significant level of musical skills. This is a serious performing group that participates at Youth Arts Coalition Band, Orchestra and Choral Festival, as well as several concerts throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 2. They are also being trained in personal and ensemble skills necessary for participation in the Senior Orchestra. Placement appointments are required for placement in the Junior Orchestra.

The Symphony Orchestra is our most advanced orchestra, comprised of students who are very proficient on their instruments. These students are held to the highest standards of musicianship. Senior Orchestra performs at Youth Arts Coalition Band, Orchestra and Choral Festival, represents HSMA on tour, and performs numerous times throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert 3. Placement appointments are required for placement in the Symphony Orchestra.

General Music

Music Readiness

Music Readiness is geared toward 2-5 year olds. No practice times are recorded, but students will be provided with CD to help them start developing daily practice habits. Students will learn the staff, half notes/rests, quarter notes/rests, eighth notes/rests, scales and basic rhythms. Music Readiness students perform in Spring Concert 1. No placement appointment is needed.

Elementary Music

Elementary Music is geared toward students aged 5-7. They will work on musical packets containing CDs to help them develop good practice habits. They will learn to sing in rounds, partner songs, and in unison. Elementary Music students perform in the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 1. No placement appointment is needed.

Music Fundamentals

Music Fundamentals is geared toward students aged 7-9. They will study musical theory in addition to exploring sound, musical genres and musical families. Students will create their own musical instrument, compose a short song, and learn to compose harmonies, sing in rounds, partner songs, unison and two-part harmony. Students in Music Fundamentals perform in the Winter Concert and Spring Concert 2. No placement appointment is needed.
