HSMA Placement Appointments
What’s the purpose Placement Appointments?
To give conductors the opportunity to hear how the student has progressed as a musician and to place the student in the appropriate group. Placement appointments are for Band, Choir and Orchestra – but only if the student has previous experience. Instrumentalists with no experience will start in beginning band/beginning orchestra. Some parents sign up for a placement appointment for beginners if they have questions or want to see if it is appropriate for their student to start a beginning instrumental class this school year.
Where and When are they?
Placement Appointments are at Pennway Church of God – (1101 E Cavanaugh Rd, Lansing, MI 48910). Band and Orchestra placements will be on Thursday Sept 7th from 6-9PM, Friday Sept 8th from 6-9PM and Saturday, Sept 9th from 9AM-1PM. Choir placements will be on Friday Sept 8th from 6-9PM and Saturday Sept 9th from 9AM-1PM. If none of those times will work for your family, please sign up and select the “please contact me” option so we can figure out something that works for you!
What happens at a placement appointment?
The student will play or sing a prepared piece of music, play two scales, and play or sing some music the student has never seen before (we’ll provide that). The goal is for us to determine which group would best serve your student and we’ll give a quick pointer to help them grow, too. Parents are welcome to join their student for the placement appointment, but we do ask that any other HSMA siblings wait outside the room. A placement appointment should take about 8-12 minutes.
